Tourismusinformation Spitz

Description

A stroll through the alleyways of Spitz gives the impression of a journey through time: Baroque town houses, romantic courtyards, charming corners, historic squares wherever you look. Sights such as the late Gothic three-aisled church from the 15th century, the old town hall, Spitz Castle and the Maritime Museum in the baroque Erlahof bring the history of the town to life. There are many active ways to encounter happiness in Spitz. Take a leisurely stroll along the banks of the Danube, hike uphill along the World Heritage Trail or to the Jauerling and recharge your batteries on a bike. Afterwards, cool off in the idyllic outdoor pool right next to the Danube.

Spitz was first mentioned in a document in 865 and some of its sights still bear witness to its long and eventful history. The remains of the fortified Hinterhaus castle date back to the 12th century. A visit to the ruins and the famous Red Gate gives a good idea of the defensive technology of the past - and still offers a fantastic view of the Danube today. The late Gothic, three-aisled parish church from the 15th century has a rare architectural feature. The chancel of the church building is bent off axis.

Viticulture is very important here: in addition to the wealth of experience and high quality awareness of the Wachau winegrowers, Spitz also has a unique microclimate. The cool air that flows from the Waldviertel through the Spitzer Graben over the steep primary rock terraces to the Danube and the temperature fluctuations between day and night give the Spitzer wines a very special character.
Alongside the Singerriedel, the Tausendeimer-Berg is one of the most famous vineyards in the village. Its name is a reminder of the exceptionally high yield of the vines. Today, that would be a volume of 56,000 liters - Riesling, Grüne Veltliner and Neuburger in particular thrive excellently here.
World-famous wines, regional specialties in one of the inns or at a wine tavern and traditional festivals offer a welcome opportunity to enjoy and celebrate life here!
