Raxendorf, in the Melk district, is nestled in a beautiful hilly landscape—between the western slope of the Jauerling and the Waldviertel high plateau. More than 30 villages and isolated farmsteads are scattered throughout the entire municipal area—at elevations ranging from 450 to 850 meters above sea level. The best way to explore this nature-loving market town is on easy hikes or by bicycle or mountain bike.

Raxendorf: Day Trip Ideas & Attractions

The Heiligenblut pilgrimage church is a popular destination: This late-Gothic parish church impresses with its tall 15th-century tabernacle and beautiful stained-glass windows. It is said to stand on the site of a former Eucharistic miracle. Also well worth seeing is the so-called “Sassingschlösserl”: a castle ruin built of hewn stones.

There’s plenty to see at the highest point of Pöggstall: At an elevation of 911 meters, the accessible viewing platform in Braunegg offers a magnificent panoramic view. Information boards, a wooden fountain, animal sculptures, and a shelter with a telescope make this lovingly designed viewpoint the ideal place to take a break.

Explore Raxendorf on Foot—and Discover Its Charms

Numerous moderate and well-marked hiking trails lead through the Raxendorf area—across gently rolling meadows and through shady forests. Popular routes include the three-hour Jauerling Loop 05 from Weiten to Raxendorf or the romantic Kaiserhöhlenweg— a loop trail that begins and ends at the Raxendorf municipal office.

A great tip for mountain bikers is the scenic “Großer Berg” trail: it’s a short loop that starts and ends at the Raxendorf municipal office.
