The Spitzer Graben in the Wachau wine-growing region and World Heritage Site is a side valley of the Danube Valley, which runs north from Spitz towards the Waldviertel via Elsarn am Jauerling to Mühldorf. It is crossed by the Spitzerbach stream, which flows into the Danube near the western end of Spitz.
The Danube once flowed through the Spitzer Graben. This is why the gentle valley along the Spitzer Bach is the largest side valley of the Wachau. Gut am Steg, Vießling and Elsarn are home to the steepest wine terraces in the Wachau. At the upper end of the valley lies Mühldorf, surrounded by a blossoming idyll of meadows and fruit trees. It is hard to believe that graphite was once mined on the edge of the village. Today, natural spectacles such as the apricot blossom can be admired there and many award-winning Grüne Veltliners, Rieslings and Neuburger wines can be tasted.
The Zornberg vineyard and the associated Zornberghütte hut are also located on the panoramic trail between Spitz and Mühldorf. Winegrowers from the Marivino association personally serve you Wachau wines, juices and other delicacies at the Zornberghütte in the Ried Zornberg at an altitude of 420 meters. Nowhere else does wine taste better! In fine weather from around May on many Sundays and public holidays from 11 am - 4 pm at the Zornberghütte in the Spitzergraben.
Tip: It's worth filling a picnic rucksack with Wachau specialties and wines and taking a break at one or two beautiful spots.
