Ruin back house

Ruins, Scenic lookout

Description

The Hinterhaus ruins, first mentioned in 1243, lie on a rocky ridge and tower high above the village of Spitz.

The Knights of Spitz lived in the ruins of Hinterhaus 700 years ago. This castle was used by the Kuenringers to monitor the Danube. Today, the ruins are a popular excursion destination for families in the Wachau.

Its defensive walls, Romanesque palace and keep are still well preserved and freely accessible all year round. Especially worth seeing during the big summer solstice festival.

Parking is available under the ruins, at the train station in Spitz or on the Donaulände.
